In Honkai: Star Rail lore, SAM is a genetically engineered warrior built for high-intensity galactic warfare. Crafting a full-body mech suit demands immense technical skill. Cosplayer @azpochita 3D-printed, hand-sanded, and assembled the entire suit from scratch.


When capturing 3D-printed plastic materials under studio lights, improper exposure can make the surface look flat. As a Metro Vancouver cosplay photographer, my goal was to use directional lighting to highlight the angular contours of the suit, giving the plastic composite the realistic weight and sheen of hardened battle alloy.

Shooting at @Joytech studio gave us access to cutting-edge LED panel technology, but balancing camera settings against digital screens required careful technical precision.

Syncing Camera Shutter Speeds with LED Refresh Frequency
Photographs taken of digital screens often suffer from horizontal black bars or moiré patterns caused by mismatched frequencies between the camera shutter and the LED diodes. To capture crisp background details, we matched our shutter speed to the refresh rate of the wall, ensuring clean, streak-free images in every shot.

Balancing Subject Lighting against Background Luminance
To prevent studio strobes from washing out the LED wall contrast or turning SAM into an unlit silhouette:


- Distance Separation: We placed @azpochita 6 to 8 feet ahead of the LED panels to prevent shadows on the wall and eliminate screen moiré.
- Grid Light Modifiers: Narrow-grid softboxes kept strobe light strictly contained on SAM’s armour plating.
- Exposure Matching: The LED wall provided dramatic ambient rim lighting, while strobes were dialled back to match the screen’s brightness perfectly.
