The excitement surrounding the Gundam Base Pop-Up Vancouver this year was palpable. Having heard stories of dedicated fans lining up for hours on opening day, I wasn’t sure what to expect when visiting on a weekday evening. As an event photographer and a parent, my goal was simple: document the vibrant atmosphere of this Vancouver mall exhibition and, hopefully, give my kids a memorable experience. Armed with my camera, we navigated the displays under the mall’s ambient evening lights.

The Challenge of Mall Event Photography
Shooting an indoor event without a flash always presents unique challenges. By the time we arrived, the sun had set, and the only available illumination was the artificial mixed lighting of the mall and the display cases. My goal was to carefully document this rare event using only the existing environmental light.

Despite the mixed colour temperatures, the models looked incredible. I focused my lens on a Close-up macro shot of the classic RX-78-2 Gundam model in Vancouver, capturing its intricate details. Moving along the exhibits, the Stunning transparent blue custom Gunpla model captured at the 2026 Gundam Base Pop-Up in Canada, and a Dynamic action pose of a clear plastic Gundam model showcased at the Vancouver Gunpla exhibition truly stood out under the showcase spotlights.

The reflections on the glass required careful positioning, but it was entirely worth it to capture the Intricate gold and white custom-built Gunpla on display at the Gundam Base World Tour 2026 and the expertly customized black and pink Wing Gundam model photographed at the Gundam Pop-Up Tour.

A Lucky Break: Building Their First SD Gundam
We initially thought we had missed our chance to participate in the hands-on building workshop, as online tickets were completely sold out. However, luck was on our side! We managed to register on-site, grabbed a quick dinner, and returned 30 minutes later for our slot.

Watching my children engage in the hobby was the highlight of the night. A young child wearing a Gundam paper hat carefully examines model runners at the Vancouver Gundam Base Pop-Up. It was their very first time building SD Gundam kits. The concentration on their faces was priceless—a Focused kid wearing a Gundam hat building a Gunpla model perfectly encapsulates the joy of this hands-on experience. They even received the iconic paper Gundam helmets, which made the 30-minute building session feel like a real induction into the Gunpla community.

Marvelling at Limited Edition Gunpla
While budget constraints meant we couldn’t take home the high-end collector’s items, viewing the limited edition Gunpla was a visual feast. The Product shot of the exclusive RG 1/144 The Gundam Base Limited RX-78-2 model in Vancouver showcased the incredible engineering Bandai brings to these kits.

The event space itself was beautifully arranged. A Panoramic overview of the bustling Gundam Base Pop-Up event, surrounded by mall decorations in Vancouver, highlighted how the mecha culture blended seamlessly with the venue. Massive displays, like the Large-scale super deformed Zaku and RX-78-2 Gundam statues welcoming fans at the Vancouver event and an Impressive large-scale custom mecha statue exhibiting mechanical details at the Vancouver Gundam event, served as perfect photo ops.

Even creative fan-favourites, like a Creative custom pink Zaku model featuring Lacus Clyne decals and a miniature figure on display, added a wonderful touch of personality to the tour.

Though we left without buying the rarest kits, the memories made and the images captured—like the Brilliant metallic red Sazabi model showcasing premium custom paintwork at the Gundam Base exhibition — made this Gunpla event photography session incredibly rewarding.
